Elephant hunting:
\nMany hunters dream of the day when they can experience one of Africa's oldest hunting traditions: carrying a double-barreled rifle over their shoulder and taking down a behemoth the size of a double-decker bus.
\nElephant hunting is mostly done on foot, following promising new tracks until the animal is sighted. It is then determined whether the tusks are trophy size or not. Usually this type of hunting consists of hours of walking only to be disappointed by a large body but small tusks. In most cases, an elephant hunt is a psychological battle of endurance, patience and persistence with plenty of blisters, sunburn and exhaustion.
\nThe shot is often fairly quick, usually a brain shot from a large caliber, heavy bullet at close range is recommended. The minimum caliber is the .375 H&H, which is required by law in many countries. Most hunters prefer something heavier like .416 or .458 Magnum upwards, with heavier double bullets being the best choice.
\nWhen facing the elephant, a frontal brain shot is one of the most difficult shots to master. The brain, the size of an American football, is located far back in the skull. A lateral brain shot places the brain in front of the ear hole, behind the eye, and slightly above the zeugmatic arch. The actual aiming point for a brain shot varies greatly depending on the angle the animal is at at the time of the hit.
\nIn short, any type of brain shot on an elephant is not easy. There are many things to consider before applying it! A broadside heart\/lung shot is a better decision when it is difficult to get close to the elephant or when there is little time to put the shot in.
\nA large bull elephant with 100 pounds of ivory tusks is considered by many to be the ultimate African trophy, but these days anything over 40 pounds is still considered trophy quality.
\nElephants are constant feeders, resting during the heat of the day, and are destructive to their habitat when confined to specific areas, often destroying hundreds of trees. Their influence also extends to destroying the habitat of other species, creating a serious dilemma for habitat and conservation.
\nDespite their size, elephants are worthy of their status and offer one of the most difficult hunting challenges available today.
