Mit einer Fläche von 450.000 km² ist Schweden sehr unterschiedlich dicht besiedelt. Während um Stockholm rund 240 Einw./km² leben, sind es im hohen Norden noch nicht einmal 5 Menschen/km².
Zwei Drittel der Landesfläche ist bewaldet. Laubwälder im Süden, nach Norden Mischwälder mit Fichten und Eichen. Vom 60. Breitengrad bis zur Nordgrenze Taiga und borealer Nadelwald. 84.000 Binnenseen bedecken 8,5 % der Landesfläche.
Die größte Sehenswürdigkeit ist die weite, oft unberührte Natur des Landes.
