Das beherrschende Landschaftselement bildet der von Norden her ins Land ziehende, weit ausschwingende Gebirgsbogen der Karpaten. Als mächtiger Mittelgebirgswall umrahmen sie das Hochland von Siebenbürgen, das den Kernraum des Landes bildet. Nach außen senken sich die Gebirgszüge über Hügellandschaften zu dem Tiefland der Teiß im Westen, der Walachei im Süden und der Moldauplatte im Osten.

The dominating landscape element is formed by the mountainous arch of the Carpathians which stretches out from the north. As a mighty "Mittelgebirgswall" they frame the highlands of Siebenbürgen, which forms the heart of the country. To the outside, the mountain ranges descend to the lowlands of the Teiss in the west, Wallachia in the south, and the Molda plate in the east.
